Avoca on the West Nishnabotna River started out as Pacific and was a center of agitation to organize what would have been Iowas 100th county. The Grange and the German immigrants played a part in the towns history which included its own brewery and Black Forest educated watchmaker. Avoca was also the effective terminus of both the Avoca, Harlan & Northern and the Avoca, Macedonia & Southwestern railroad branch lines built by the Rock Island.

Johnny Carson lived in town as a child during the 1930s while U.S. Highway 59 and then Interstate 80 transformed the community in a different way.
